Al-Issa, head of Hamas’s combat support headquarters and a member of its General Security Council, was described by Israeli authorities as one of the last remaining senior commanders in Gaza.
The IDF said Al-Issa played a significant role in planning the October 7, 2023, attacks that killed over 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages. He also led force-buildup and training operations, and worked to rebuild Hamas’ damaged systems during the ongoing war.
A Syrian-born militant who entered Gaza in 2005, Al-Issa brought combat experience from Iraq and Syria and helped establish the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades’ military academy.
His death follows a series of targeted killings by Israel since October 2023, including top Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh. Last week, the IDF also killed As’ad Abu Sharaiya, leader of the Hamas-allied terror group Mujahideen Brigades, along with the group’s commander, Mahmoud Kuhail, in central Gaza.
Israel’s campaign in Gaza has killed over 56,000 people, according to local sources, and left the enclave facing severe shortages of essentials. Demonstrations across Israel on Saturday called for a ceasefire and the return of the remaining 50 hostages, 28 of whom are believed dead.
Thousands of protesters rallied in Tel Aviv to demand an end to the Gaza war and the release of the remaining hostages.
