Ukrainian forces have retreated from the northeastern outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a strategically significant town in the eastern Donetsk region, under the pressure of a sustained Russian offensive. The retreat comes as Russian forces continue their relentless assault on Ukraine’s eastern Donbas sector, gaining new ground through extensive air strikes, artillery bombardments, and repeated ground assaults.
Chasiv Yar, which lies west of the Russian-controlled city of Bakhmut, has been a focal point of Russian efforts due to its elevated position. Capturing Chasiv Yar would jeopardize nearby cities, compromise critical Ukrainian supply routes, and move Russia closer to its goal of seizing the entire Donetsk region. Ukrainian military spokesperson Nazar Voloshyn confirmed that Ukrainian troops had to withdraw from a neighborhood in the town, citing the destruction of defensive positions and the threat of significant casualties if they remained.
The Russian advance has been marked by significant gains around Toretsk, where Russian infantry captured the village of Yurivka following intense house-to-house combat. This progress represents a notable victory for Russian forces, who had previously struggled to achieve substantial territorial gains in the sector. Both Russian and Ukrainian sources confirmed that elements of Russia’s Central Group of Forces reached Toretsk’s outskirts and continued to attack surrounding villages.
Chasiv Yar, now largely in ruins after months of Russian shelling, once had a population of 12,000 but is now deserted. Ukrainian fighters have repositioned to better-protected areas within the town, continuing their resistance against the more populous Russian forces. Battalion commander Oleh Shriaiev reported that Russian troops outnumber Ukrainian forces ten to one.
As the conflict continues, the battle for control over Chasiv Yar and surrounding areas remains critical. Ukraine’s armed forces have repeatedly stated that Russia’s goal is to capture Chasiv Yar to facilitate further advances into Ukrainian territory.
