United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has announced that a design has been selected for the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, with plans to make it operational by the end of his term in 2029.
“We’ll have it done in about three years,” Trump said from the Oval Office on Tuesday. He explained that the system would incorporate “next-generation” technologies across land, sea, and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.

“Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles, even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space,” Trump said.
Trump also noted that Canada has expressed interest in joining the initiative.
According to Trump, the design chosen by the administration is expected to cost $175 billion. The president said he has already requested an initial $25 billion through his new tax bill, which is currently moving through Congress.
Earlier this month, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the space-based components of the Golden Dome initiative could cost as much as $542 billion over the next 20 years.
Just days after returning to the White House in January, Trump unveiled plans for a U.S. version of Israel’s Iron Dome to defend the country against aerial threats including ballistic and cruise missiles.
The system has been lauded for its 90% success rate in intercepting missile attacks and has played a vital role in safeguarding Israel from threats posed by Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
The administration’s investment in the Golden Dome system comes amid growing concerns within the intelligence community over emerging missile threats to the U.S. The Defense Intelligence Agency warned last week that China and Russia are developing advanced hypersonic missiles designed to bypass conventional air defenses.
Officials also warned that by 2035, China and Russia could have up to 5,000 land-attack cruise missiles, enough to strike much of the continental U.S.
