President Donald Trump on Monday said he will sign an executive order directing the development of a missile defense system modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome.
The initiative aims to safeguard the United States from advanced missile threats, including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles.
According to reports, the executive order will mandate the rapid development and deployment of advanced missile defense technologies. These include space-based interceptors, hypersonic and ballistic tracking systems, and non-kinetic defense capabilities.
The order will also direct a review of the current missile defense posture and calls for greater cooperation with U.S. allies on defense technology.
The Israeli Iron Dome system, which the new program is modeled after, has been praised for its 90% success rate in intercepting missile attacks. It has been instrumental in protecting Israel from attacks by Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
President Trump highlighted the success of the Israeli system and pledged that the U.S. version would be “made entirely in America,” fulfilling a key campaign promise to enhance national security.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the initiative as part of a broader effort to restore military strength and protect American lives. He noted that the new missile defense system aligns with the administration’s doctrine of “peace through strength,” and that the program would be executed swiftly.
National security expert Victoria Coates praised the plan as a modern realization of President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, which envisioned a missile shield to protect the U.S. from aerial threats.
