U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an estimated 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war against Ukraine since the start of 2025.
“On the Russian side, they’ve lost 100,000 soldiers – dead, not injured – dead,” he said. “On the Ukrainian side, the numbers are less but still very significant.” Rubio said at a press conference on Thursday.
Rubio said President Donald Trump does not like wars because they waste both money and lives and that he is committed to doing everything within his power to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“We’re going to continue to work at it. We understand that these things take time and patience, but obviously, we’re also frustrated that more progress has not been made,” Rubio said.
Ukraine does not release full casualty numbers, but according to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukrainian forces have eliminated over 230,000 Russian troops—killed or wounded—since January.
The General Staff of Ukraine reports total Russian losses since 2022 at over 1 million, including wounded.
