The Department of Defense has finally released a report on extremism in the military over a year and a half after its completion. The report, commissioned by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in April 2021, aimed to assess the extent of extremism within the military’s ranks. However, it offers little new data on the scope of the problem and instead collates existing information from sources like the military’s inspector general. The report does highlight that extremism, while rare, poses a danger, and it criticizes the military’s security clearance process for not adequately addressing the threat of home-grown extremism, recommending updates to better identify and prevent extremists from accessing privileged positions within the military community.
