The Monroe Doctrine, nearing its 200th anniversary, has a complex history that challenges its original noble intentions. Initially designed to protect Latin American nations from European colonialism, it became a tool for U.S. interventionism in the Western Hemisphere. Throughout the years, the U.S. used the doctrine and its corollaries to justify military interventions, economic coercion, and regime changes across Latin America, often prioritizing its own economic interests over democracy and justice. To uphold principles of international law and fairness, it is argued that the U.S. should reconsider and abandon the Monroe Doctrine’s influence in the region.
