Maureen Sweeney, the Irish woman whose weather forecast played a pivotal role in changing the date of the D-Day invasion during World War II, passed away at the age of 100 on December 17. On her 21st birthday in 1944, Sweeney, then known as Maureen Flavin, detected a storm brewing in the Atlantic through her weather station in Blacksod, Ireland. Her information reached General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who heeded her warning and postponed the invasion by a day, ultimately preventing a potential disaster for the Allied forces. Sweeney received recognition for her crucial contribution to history and was honored with a citation from the U.S. House of Representatives in 2021.
