The number of veterans in Congress has been steadily declining since the 1970s, with the all-volunteer force and reduced enlistments contributing to this trend. However, the 2024 elections may see a resurgence of veterans in Congress, challenging the decline. Currently, there are 97 members with military backgrounds, the highest since 2015. Out of these, 60% served at least part of their enlistment after 2001, indicating a younger generation of veterans entering politics. To maintain or increase this number, new candidates with military experience will need to win state races in upcoming elections, with outcomes becoming clearer by early summer.
