Jason Thomas Nichols, 30, of Fairfield, California, was arrested April 7, 2026, after forcing his way into a neighbor’s home on the 1700 block of Burbank Court, identifying himself as Harry Dresden, the wizard protagonist of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files novel series, and engaging in a physical altercation that left both men with head injuries, the Fairfield Police Department confirmed.

Officers were dispatched to the address at approximately 9:30 a.m. following a report of an unknown male attempting to force entry into a residence occupied by a woman and child, Fairfield police said in a statement posted to the department’s official Facebook page.

Nichols initially kicked the front door before gaining entry through a sliding glass door.

“The homeowner’s husband, who was away at the time, observed the suspect through a home security camera and immediately returned to the residence,” the department stated.

The husband armed himself with a shovel and confronted Nichols inside the home.

“A physical altercation ensued, during which both the homeowner and Nichols sustained head injuries,” police said.

Ring camera footage, which accumulated over four million impressions on X by April 12, appears to show Nichols in a black trench coat consistent with Harry Dresden’s signature appearance across Butcher’s book series and its short-lived television adaptation.

In the footage, Nichols tells the homeowner through the camera that he is looking for “Victor” and insists a young girl is trapped inside. “Open the door now, or I will f—in’ end you,” he says.

Inside camera footage posted on X by an independent account, Thefactsdude, which has not been independently verified by SOFX, shows Nichols moving through the home and opening a closet door before the homeowner appears on camera holding a shovel.

The footage shows Nichols telling the homeowner his name was Harry Dresden and saying he was former military. He continued demanding a search for a trapped girl after officers arrived, Thefactsdude reported.

Officers found Nichols outside the residence and took him into custody. He was transported to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield for treatment and booked into the Solano County Justice Center Detention Facility.

Nichols faces four felony counts: assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, criminal threats with intent to terrorize, first-degree burglary, and vandalism. His bail was set at $35,000.

A court appearance was scheduled for April 13, 2026, at 1:25 p.m. at Solano County Superior Court’s Fairfield division, court records show.

Whether Nichols knew the family before the incident has not been confirmed by police.

No official statement addressing his military service record, his identification with the Dresden character, or any underlying factors has been released as of publication.

“We are grateful that the family is safe and commend our officers for their swift response in bringing this dangerous situation to a safe resolution,” Fairfield police said.

He’s lucky he was in the Land of Fruits and Nuts. In the South, we would have shot him and the sheriff would have thanked us for doing it.
