A group of six Dutch military personnel were detained by Hezbollah in the Bir al-Abd neighborhood of Beirut’s southern suburbs. Equipped with military-grade weaponry and vehicles, they were conducting a reconnaissance mission to scout evacuation routes in anticipation of a potential escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. The operation was described as an evacuation drill by the detained personnel, who admitted to being members of the Dutch military and part of an auxiliary unit responsible for the security of the Dutch embassy in Beirut, present in Lebanon since October.
Following their detention, Hezbollah transferred the individuals to the Lebanese Army Intelligence. Subsequently, they were released and returned to the Dutch embassy after the Netherlands embassy formally requested their handover. The incident has highlighted the tense atmosphere in the region and the proactive measures taken by foreign military units stationed in Lebanon.
Dutch media, including De Telegraaf, reported the detention, underscoring the sensitivity of foreign military operations in areas of strategic interest to Hezbollah.
