At Fort Liberty, North Carolina, Army psychological operations instructors are demonstrating how simple, accessible technology can significantly alter the dynamics of modern warfare. The technology, known as Ghost Machine, allows operators to clone voices using minimal audio samples. Developed primarily for psychological operations, this tool can replicate voices for various purposes, from deception in combat to training exercises.

The voice-cloning capability of Ghost Machine is a modern twist on historical psychological tactics, such as broadcasting persuasive messages to enemy troops to encourage surrender or defection. Unlike past methods that required the physical presence of collaborators, today’s technology can generate convincing audio from any source, including intercepted communications. This capability was showcased at ARSOF’s annual capabilities exercise, where instructors explained the potential tactical applications of these tools.
