The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have begun deploying robotic dogs supplied by the British company Brit Alliance. This marks the first known combat use of such machines, with the Ukrainian military incorporating them as part of their broader strategy to counter Russian forces. The robotic units, known as BAD.2, are remotely operated and are not autonomous, functioning similarly to ground-based versions of the widely used aerial drones.
The BAD.2 robots are designed for reconnaissance missions, equipped with high-definition video cameras that allow them to navigate difficult terrain such as trenches, wooded areas, and buildings—places that are often inaccessible to traditional drones. Capable of speeds up to 15 km/h (9 mph) and featuring a battery life of up to five hours, these robots can be controlled from up to two miles away. Their compact design and low profile make them ideal for stealth operations, with the added capability of carrying up to 15 pounds of supplies, such as ammunition or first aid kits.

Kurt, a commander in Ukraine’s 28th Mechanized Brigade, highlighted the value of these robotic dogs, stating on social media, “Every unit should have one of these dogs.” The robots are seen as a significant force multiplier, reducing the risks faced by human soldiers by taking on dangerous tasks like landmine detection and enemy surveillance. This capability is particularly crucial as Russian forces have fortified their positions deep within Ukrainian territory, making reconnaissance missions perilous.

The BAD.2 units also include advanced features such as thermal imaging for night operations and the ability to erase all stored data remotely if the robot is captured, ensuring that sensitive information does not fall into enemy hands. The camouflage, provided by German company Concamo, enhances the robot’s stealth by blending it seamlessly into the surrounding environment, making it difficult to detect visually or via thermal imaging.
The deployment of these robotic dogs represents a shift in military tactics, where technology increasingly complements traditional combat roles. As Ukraine continues to face challenges from Russian aggression, these machines are expected to play an increasingly vital role in the defense efforts, particularly in high-risk missions that would otherwise endanger human lives.
