On Special Operations Forces Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to the frontline area of Vovchansk in the northeastern Kharkiv region to honor the Special Operations Forces (SSO) fighters. The President recognized their contributions to Ukraine’s defense, particularly against Russian forces, and awarded state honors, including two titles of Hero of Ukraine, the nation’s highest award.
Established in 2016, the Special Operations Forces have been pivotal in Ukraine’s defense efforts since the Russian-Ukrainian conflict began. During his visit, Zelensky emphasized the strategic importance of the Kharkiv sector, where Russian forces have recently intensified their offensive. He presented state awards to SSO soldiers and acknowledged their ongoing efforts in conducting special operations and defending key areas.
“Kharkiv sector. The advanced command post of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; Vovchansk district,” Zelensky stated, highlighting the importance of their mission. He also noted the transformation of the SSO from using outdated equipment and second-hand uniforms in 2014 to operating with modern NATO-standard training and equipment.
In May, Russian troops opened a new front in the north of the Kharkiv region, making significant inroads before being halted by Ukrainian forces. Despite continued Russian airstrikes and assaults, Ukrainian troops, including the SSO, have successfully defended the region. Zelensky praised the SSO for their heroic operations behind enemy lines and their role in defending and liberating Ukrainian territories, including the defense of Donetsk airport in 2014 and current operations in the Kharkiv region.
The President’s visit also included a stop in Derhachi, a town frequently targeted by Russian attacks. He urged the soldiers to take care of themselves and assured them of the country’s support, stating, “The whole country is counting on you. We will definitely win.”
The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces continue to conduct airstrikes in the border areas, with Ukrainian forces repelling multiple assaults near Vovchansk and Hlyboke. The intense fighting has stretched Ukraine’s defenders, prompting Kyiv to seek permission from allies to use Western weapons for strikes across the border, which has helped fend off Russian advances.
