Ukrainian forces have introduced a new technological development in their ongoing conflict with Russia: a first-person view (FPV) drone equipped with an AK-74 assault rifle. The weapon was reportedly developed by the “Wild Hornets” drone group, a volunteer team producing FPV kamikaze drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In a recently released video, the drone can be seen flying over a Russian-occupied treeline in the Donetsk region, strafing targets with AK-74 fire.
The drone, referred to as the “Hornet Queen,” is designed to deliver precise aerial firepower. The footage, although unverified for time and location, demonstrates the potential for FPV drones to engage in aerial strafing attacks.

Despite its debut, the Wild Hornets Unit emphasized that the AK-74 drone is still in the testing phase. Several technical challenges remain, including the need for improved targeting systems and reloading mechanisms. These limitations, combined with the small ammunition capacity, indicate that while the weapon is operational, further refinement is required to enhance its combat effectiveness. A Ukrainian aerial scout told the Kyiv Post that while ground-based rifle systems are available, they are often too expensive and cumbersome for widespread battlefield use.
The Wild Hornets group, formed by volunteers, has already gained a reputation for their innovative approach to drone warfare. They have claimed significant successes, including the downing of more than 100 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat. Their drones have been used not only for bombing runs but also for aerial reconnaissance and as communication relays on the battlefield.
