The US Army has discontinued a program that allowed soldiers to store their personal belongings and vehicles at no cost while deployed or away from home for extended periods. The decision, made in October, was not widely reported until recently. The Army Sustainment Command is now working on a policy that would enable cost-free storage for soldiers, acknowledging the potential burden this change could place on them. In the meantime, soldiers are authorized to store their vehicles in motor pools, which are often not climate-controlled and occupied by tactical vehicles.
