Exclusive videos obtained by the Kyiv Post reveal Ukrainian special forces collaborating with Syrian rebels to dismantle Russian mercenaries in Syria. The footage, dated March 2024, showcases these coordinated assaults in the Golan Heights, where Russian military forces are heavily concentrated.
The Ukrainian special unit “Khimik,” in cooperation with Syrian opposition groups, is executing targeted attacks on Russian mercenaries who are supporting the Bashar al-Assad regime. This region in southern Syria is currently experiencing significant conflict due to these operations.
A source from Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR), speaking under anonymity, informed the Kyiv Post that these allied forces have been conducting continuous strikes on Russian military installations since the start of the year. These attacks target checkpoints, strongholds, foot patrols, and military convoys, utilizing rocket-propelled grenades, improvised mortars, and IEDs. The video depicts explosive devices being used against vehicles and foot patrols, including a high-speed attack on a minibus.

These operations are part of a broader strategic effort by Ukraine to challenge Russian military interests. The GUR reports that these operations have had a significant impact on the Russian military presence in the region. Despite the redeployment of some Russian troops and equipment from Syria to Ukraine, the Russian positions in Syria remain vulnerable.
Russia’s military involvement in Syria began in 2015 to support President Assad during the civil war, leading to a substantial and sustained Russian presence. However, recent troop movements to the Ukrainian battlefield have potentially weakened their defenses in Syria. Nevertheless, Russia has established numerous recruiting centers in Syria to enlist Syrian mercenaries for the conflict in Ukraine, under the supervision of the “Center for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides and Refugee Movement Control” at the Russian-occupied Khmeimim Air Base.
