Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a significant government reshuffle. On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, along with five other ministers, submitted their resignations. The shakeup, described by Zelenskyy as essential for injecting “new energy” into the government, marks the largest cabinet overhaul since the war began in February 2022.
Kuleba, who has been a key figure in Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts, did not publicly provide a reason for his resignation. Over his two-and-a-half-year tenure as foreign minister, Kuleba was instrumental in securing military and political support from Western allies. He played a central role in advocating for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the European Union, as well as successfully lobbying for advanced air defense systems, such as the U.S. Patriot missiles, to counter Russian missile attacks.
This reshuffle comes as Russian forces continue to escalate their missile strikes against Ukrainian cities. On Wednesday, a Russian missile attack on the city of Lviv killed at least seven people and injured 35 others. Another strike on Tuesday targeted a military academy in the city of Poltava, killing over 50 people in one of the deadliest attacks since the war began. The increasing intensity of Russian strikes has prompted Zelenskyy to call for more Western military aid, urging Ukraine’s allies to provide weapons with longer ranges to counter these assaults.
