Ukrainian authorities have arrested two high-ranking officials from the country’s State Security Service (SBU), accused of participating in a Russian-led conspiracy to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The suspects, both colonels in Ukraine’s State Protection Service, were allegedly recruited by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). According to the SBU, these officials were integral in a broader network of agents tasked with coordinating a lethal attack on President Zelenskyy and other top Ukrainian leaders.
The assassination plot reportedly involved several layers of planning, including the surveillance of Zelenskyy’s movements and the acquisition of drones for a potential missile and drone strike at a location frequented by the president. The plan also targeted other key Ukrainian figures, including the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, and the head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, suggesting a significant breach of Ukraine’s internal security apparatus.
The investigation revealed that the accused officers provided classified information to Moscow and had access to explosive devices. The Ukrainian security services managed to thwart the plot before any harm could come to President Zelenskyy or other officials.
