Ukraine initiated a series of drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure across eight Russian regions in the early hours of Saturday. According to a Ukrainian special services source, these attacks specifically targeted a fuel depot and multiple power substations. The operations were reportedly conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Defence Intelligence, and the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The source indicated that these facilities were selected due to their role in supporting Russian military-industrial activities.
Russian authorities confirmed the attacks, noting significant drone activity in the regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Tula, Smolensk, Ryazan, Kaluga, and even near Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that their air defense systems managed to intercept or destroy a total of 50 Ukrainian drones. Despite these efforts, damage was reported at three power substations and a fuel storage facility, causing fires and disruptions in power and water supply in some areas.
In response to the drone strikes, local Russian officials detailed the incidents and their immediate responses. Smolensk’s regional governor, Vasiliy Anokhin, reported an early morning fire at a fuel depot resulting from drone debris, despite the interception of the drones by air defenses. Other regions like Bryansk and Kaluga also experienced fires at key energy facilities, leading to emergency responses to manage the unfolding situations.
The use of drones with extended range and advanced capabilities, including some equipped with basic artificial intelligence features, has been highlighted as a key factor in the success of these operations. These developments come as Ukraine faces a worsening situation on its eastern front, with ongoing heavy combat and significant losses.
