the Ukrainian military has officially announced its decision to withdraw troops from the strategically important town of Avdiivka. This move comes after months of intense combat and significant pressure from Russian forces aiming to capture the town. Avdiivka, known as a gateway to the Russian-seized city of Donetsk, has been the scene of some of the most brutal fighting in the conflict.
Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, General Colonel Oleksandr Syrskyi, made the announcement on Facebook, stating that the decision was made “to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of service personnel.” He emphasized that Ukrainian forces had fought with dignity, managing to inflict substantial losses on Russian troops in terms of manpower and equipment. The withdrawal aims to move Ukrainian forces to “more favourable lines,” with General Syrskyi noting that the decision was based on the “operational situation around Avdiivka.”
The situation in Avdiivka had become increasingly dire, with the United States warning on Friday that the town was “at risk of falling into Russian control,” partly due to Ukraine’s artillery ammunition shortages. Russian sources have detailed their advances in and around Avdiivka, claiming control over key areas such as the “Cheburashka” fortified area, Avdiivka City Park, and expanding their zone of control west of the Brevno fortified area. Reports also indicate that Russian units have raised flags on the Avdiivka stele, marking their presence in the town. Russian sources further claimed to have captured the Zheleznodorozhnikov Hospital and advanced several hundred meters along Industrial Avenue.
Amidst these developments, there have been increasing reports of Ukrainian formations attempting to retreat from Avdiivka, navigating through fields and mined roads to escape the city and regroup.
