In a substantial development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russia announced it has gained complete control of Avdiivka, a city of strategic importance in the Donetsk region. This victory represents Russia’s most significant territorial gain since the capture of Bakhmut last May. The Russian military’s assertion comes after Ukrainian forces, led by army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, withdrew from the city to avoid potential encirclement by Russian forces. Syrskyi emphasized that the decision was taken to safeguard the lives and health of Ukrainian servicemen and to stabilize the situation by moving troops to more defensible positions.
Despite the Ukrainian retreat, some Ukrainian military units reportedly remained within a large Soviet-era coke production plant in Avdiivka, one of the largest in Europe. Russia described the Ukrainian withdrawal as hurried and disorganized, leading to casualties among the retreating forces.
The capture of Avdiivka grants Russia full control over the area surrounding Donetsk, a significant urban center in eastern Ukraine that has been under the control of Russian-backed forces since 2014. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled a Russian offensive in the southern front near Zaporizhzhia.
