Russia Claims Control Over Avdiivka Amidst Ukrainian Retreat

In a substantial development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russia announced it has gained complete control of Avdiivka, a city of strategic importance in the Donetsk region. This victory represents Russia’s most significant territorial gain since the capture of Bakhmut last May. The Russian military’s assertion comes after Ukrainian forces, led by army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, withdrew from the city to avoid potential encirclement by Russian forces. Syrskyi emphasized that the decision was taken to safeguard the lives and health of Ukrainian servicemen and to stabilize the situation by moving troops to more defensible positions.

Despite the Ukrainian retreat, some Ukrainian military units reportedly remained within a large Soviet-era coke production plant in Avdiivka, one of the largest in Europe. Russia described the Ukrainian withdrawal as hurried and disorganized, leading to casualties among the retreating forces.

The capture of Avdiivka grants Russia full control over the area surrounding Donetsk, a significant urban center in eastern Ukraine that has been under the control of Russian-backed forces since 2014. The loss of Avdiivka is particularly symbolic as it comes nearly two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The city, which has been a focal point of intense military engagement, has seen its infrastructure almost completely destroyed, prompting the departure of the majority of its pre-war population of over 30,000 residents.

The situation in Avdiivka prior to the retreat was grim, with Ukrainian forces facing intense battles and a critical shortage of weapons, exacerbated by delays in military aid. In response to the capture, Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded the achievement as an “important victory,” while efforts were underway to secure the town fully and block Ukrainian units that had withdrawn to the coke plant.

Amidst these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been actively seeking increased support from Western allies, characterizing the struggle against Russia as a battle against a formidable adversary. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled a Russian offensive in the southern front near Zaporizhzhia.

The capture of Avdiivka marks a significant moment in the conflict, underscoring the continuous shifts in control and the high stakes involved for both Russia and Ukraine in the battle for territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Special Operations of Ukraine have recently released a YouTube video highlighting the actions of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade in Avdiivka.
