President Donald Trump warned Iran that any Houthi retaliation would be seen as an attack by Iran.
“Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by, Iran,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
The president said that while Iran is portraying itself as “the innocent victim,” in reality, it is supplying the Houthis with money, military equipment, and even intelligence.
“Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of Iran, and Iran will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!” Trump added.
Trump’s statement comes after the U.S. launched airstrikes targeting Houthi drone, missile, and air defense systems in Yemen. The strikes, which began Saturday and continued into Monday, hit over 30 sites, according to Joint Staff Director Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich. The U.S. confirmed dozens of military casualties but no verified civilian deaths.
The Houthis claimed the recent U.S. strikes in Yemen which hit the capital, Sana’a, as well as on areas in Saada, Al-Bayda and Radaa, killed 53 people, including five children.
On Sunday, the Houthis claimed to have launched 18 missiles and drones at the American aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman in the northern Red Sea in response to “American aggression.”
“If they continue their aggression, we will continue the escalation,” the group’s leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said.
The recent U.S. strikes followed Houthi threats to renew attacks on Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
Meanwhile, over the past 18 months, the Houthis have attacked U.S. Navy ships 174 times and commercial vessels 145 times, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
