The United States and Iran agreed to a two‑week ceasefire, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night, after more than a month of war in the Middle East.

The announcement came just under two hours before his deadline for Tehran to accept a deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil passage, or face potential strikes on Iran’s power plants and bridges.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, who requested that I hold off the planned military action against Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said the two‑week period will allow both sides to finalize an agreement. “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” Trump said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed Tehran’s acceptance, saying: “If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations.”

Araghchi said Iran will also allow “safe passage” through the strait during the ceasefire “via coordination with Iran’s armed forces.”

A War Department official told Axios that the U.S. has suspended all strikes following Trump’s announcement. The ceasefire agreement also received Israeli support, with Israel halting its own military actions, the outlet reported.

U.S. and Iranian officials are expected to hold peace talks Friday in Islamabad, with Vice President Vance likely to lead the U.S. delegation, according to Axios.

The ceasefire comes after the U.S. carried out about 50 strikes targeting bunkers, a radar station, and ammunition storage facilities on Kharg Island, and after Israel struck eight bridge segments used by Iranian forces to transport weapons and military equipment.

It also follows Trump’s threat earlier Tuesday to destroy Iran’s “whole civilization” if a deal was not reached.

PRESIDENT TRUMP on TruthSocial: 🇺🇸🇮🇷 A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.

I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds… pic.twitter.com/YaRiQ0iKzU
