The UK’s Nuclear-Deterrent Trident Missile Fails Launch Test

The Trident missile, a cornerstone of the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent system, experienced a significant setback as a test launch from the HMS Vanguard submarine failed. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, who was present for the test, witnessed the missile’s booster rockets fail, resulting in the missile plunging into the sea near the launch site. The incident, first reported by The Sun, has been described as highly embarrassing for both the UK and the US manufacturer of the Trident missile, given the rarity and high cost of such tests. Each Trident missile is valued at approximately £17 million, and the last test in 2016 also ended in failure.

In response to the failure, Mr. Shapps expressed his “absolute confidence” in the Trident system, including its submarines, missiles, and nuclear warheads. He acknowledged the anomaly in a written statement to Parliament but emphasized the test’s reaffirmation of the Trident system’s reliability. The Ministry of Defence echoed this sentiment, stating that the HMS Vanguard and its crew had demonstrated full capability, and the test underscored the effectiveness of the UK’s nuclear deterrent. Despite the setback, the Trident system, which has been successfully tested by the US many times, is still touted as the “most reliable weapons system in the world.”

The test failure has prompted calls from the Labour Party for assurances regarding the deterrent’s effectiveness, while the Scottish National Party criticized the expenditure on nuclear capabilities at the cost of addressing inequality and conventional military needs. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament labeled the test an expensive failure, especially in light of the reported £500 million refit of the HMS Vanguard.

The Trident missile system, operated from Vanguard-class nuclear submarines based at the Faslane Royal Navy base, is an integral part of the UK’s defense strategy. With plans to replace these submarines with the larger Dreadnought-class in the 2030s, the incident raises questions about the future of the UK’s nuclear deterrent capabilities and the implications of such failures on national and global security.
