Sudan’s warring generals, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, have agreed to meet face-to-face as part of efforts to establish a ceasefire and start political talks, as announced by the African regional bloc IGAD. This development comes amid Sudan’s expulsion of 15 diplomats from the United Arab Emirates, accusing them of supporting rebel forces. Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since the military coup in October 2021, following the ousting of dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019, leading to widespread destruction and thousands of casualties. The IGAD-mediated meeting between the generals aims to initiate confidence-building measures for resolving the conflict, with the U.S. urging the parties to adhere to their commitments and enter talks.
