South Africa’s Dyck Advisory Group Makes Its Mark in Mozambique

The Dyck Advisory Group (DAG), a private military contractor based in South Africa, has gained recognition for its fast-paced operations in difficult environments, especially in post-conflict African states like Mozambique.

The Dyck Advisory Group (DAG), a private military contractor based in South Africa, has gained recognition for its fast-paced operations in difficult environments, especially in post-conflict African states like Mozambique. However, the group has recently been scrutinized for racial discrimination and human rights violations. The organization, which provides services such as demining, explosive hazard management, and anti-poaching, expanded its scope to include private military contracting in recent years. Despite significant successes in combating insurgent groups in Mozambique, future operations may be affected by mounting accusations of human rights abuses.

Key Points:

  1. Dyck Advisory Group, founded in 2012 by former military colonel Lionel Dyck, has expanded its services from demining and specialized security dog providers to private military contracting and animal conservation. It’s particularly known for its operations in post-conflict African states.
  2. Despite significant successes in fighting insurgent groups, the group’s operations in Mozambique have been controversial, with allegations of racial discrimination and human rights violations.
  3. The organization’s operational sectors include Specialized Security, Anti-poaching, Demining, Canine Services, and Explosive Hazard Management. It operates with a combination of state and private resources, receiving contracts from various governments and multilateral organizations.
  4. The group’s tactics rely heavily on air power. They utilize a wide range of helicopters, both their own and supplied externally, to conduct rapid assessments of hostile environments, often undertaking emergency civilian evacuations.
  5. Despite these successes, Amnesty International has accused DAG of carrying out indiscriminate attacks, with allegations of firing machine guns from helicopters and dropping hand grenades into crowds of people. The future of DAG could be affected by these human rights abuse allegations.
