The U.S. military has a tradition of repurposing hunting and commercial weapons for their operations. This article highlights seven popular hunting weapons that have been adopted and utilized by the military over the years, ranging from the Winchester 1897 and Model 12 shotguns to the Remington 700 rifle.

Key Points:

  1. Winchester’s 1897 and Model 12 shotguns, once popular among hunters, were widely used during WWI and WWII. The Model 12 also saw service in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
  2. Elephant guns, large caliber sporting rifles used for hunting big game, were utilized by both British and German militaries during WWI to pierce early armor plates and armored cars.
  3. The Remington 870, an affordable and reliable shotgun, caught the attention of the military and has been used in combat situations, including in Vietnam. It still serves in the U.S. military as the versatile MCS system.
  4. The Winchester Model 70, a bolt-action hunting rifle, and the Remington 700 have been used by the military, particularly for sniping. They are known for their durability and accuracy.
  5. The Mossberg 500, an affordable and versatile pump-action shotgun, is currently the general issue pump-action shotgun of the U.S. military, after undergoing design modifications to meet specifications.
