Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed a Russian paratrooper unit in the Kursk region, according to the Communications Department of Ukraine’s Airborne Assault Forces. The incident occurred during a Russian attempt to storm Ukrainian positions on September 13, 2024. The Russian assault, which involved multiple armored vehicles, was repelled after a battle lasting several hours.
According to Ukrainian military reports, Russian forces deployed 14 pieces of military equipment to break through Ukrainian defensive lines. This included two tanks, 11 airborne infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and one armored personnel carrier (APC). The vehicles belonged to Russia’s Airborne Forces. Despite the strength of the Russian unit, Ukrainian paratroopers successfully defended their positions and destroyed five IFVs, one tank, and the APC. Several dozen Russian soldiers were reportedly killed in the battle, and the remaining Russian troops retreated from the area.
The Ukrainian military also released a video showing the destruction of Russian vehicles and attacks on Russian positions, including strikes on a building where Russian soldiers were concentrated. First-person view (FPV) drones were used to target and destroy Russian IFVs during the battle.

Following the failed assault, Russian forces have launched counterattacks in an effort to regain territory. Reports indicate that Russian troops, including elements of the Airborne Forces and naval infantry units, have made limited advances, including the recapture of some villages. However, progress has been described as marginal. Russian sources have acknowledged that Ukrainian forces continue to pose a significant threat to Russian supply lines and logistics in the region.
As of mid-September, estimates suggest that around 35,000 Russian troops are stationed in the Kursk region. There are indications that Russia may need to commit additional forces to sustain its counteroffensive efforts, with Ukrainian military sources suggesting that Moscow could station up to 70,000 personnel in the region to push back Ukrainian forces.
