A Russian Geran-2 drone struck the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during a large-scale overnight barrage on June 15, 2026, setting the UNESCO World Heritage site on fire, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) confirmed. The Geran-2 is Russia’s domestically manufactured version of the Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
SBU officers found fragments of the drone’s fuselage and engine at the Stefanivsky Chapel of the Dormition Cathedral following the 1:50 a.m. strike.

Component markings traced manufacturing to Russia’s Alabuga Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tatarstan, where Belgian, German, Swiss, French, and American companies have continued operating, according to a joint investigation by the Kyiv Independent published in April 2026. The SBU opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, classifying the attack as a war crime.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported 681 aerial weapons launched overnight, consisting of 70 missiles and 611 drones. At least 11 people were killed and 53 wounded across Ukraine. In Kyiv, at least four civilians died. In Kharkiv, four State Emergency Service (SES) firefighters and one city emergency department worker were killed when a follow-up missile strike targeted them while responding to an earlier attack.
The barrage also ignited a fire at the Mystetskyi Arsenal National Art and Culture Museum Complex. Flames destroyed Ukraine’s largest costume archive at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio, incinerating a collection of roughly 100,000 garments.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the Lavra was struck by a malfunctioning U.S.-supplied Patriot surface-to-air missile, stating that “Western countries supplied the Kyiv regime with expired missiles.” These claims have not been independently verified.
Visiting the site, Zelensky confirmed two drones targeted the complex and called the attack “one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture today.” He said Ukraine proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the G7 summit sidelines in France, but Moscow declined.
