A Russian drone attack on July 6 has left over 100,000 households without power in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, impacting the water supply in the regional capital. Ukrainian authorities reported extensive damage to energy infrastructure, resulting in emergency power shutdowns across the region.
The Sumy Oblast Military Administration confirmed the overnight strikes, which caused significant disruptions to both power and water services. Efforts are underway to restore power, according to Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national grid operator. Despite the extensive damage, there were no reported casualties apart from the affected energy facilities.
Russian state media reported that the strikes targeted a plant producing rocket ammunition in Sumy, though these claims remain unverified. Ukrainian media noted that explosions were heard in Sumy Oblast shortly after midnight, with air raid warnings of Russian Shahed-type drone attacks.
Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 24 out of 27 Russian drones using electronic jamming and anti-air defenses, according to the Ukrainian Air Force Command. These defenses have become crucial in mitigating the damage from ongoing drone and missile strikes.
The situation in Ukraine’s energy sector is dire, with constant threats to infrastructure leading to rolling blackouts and severe power shortages. This has forced neighboring countries like Poland to divert surplus electricity to support Ukraine.
