New Images Provide Clearest Look at China’s Secretive J-XDS Sixth-Generation Fighter

A photo circulating online shows the J-XDS prototype on the ground at the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) facilities in China. The image, credited to Chinese internet sources via Andreas Rupprecht, follows reports that the photographer allegedly climbed the SAC perimeter wall and was caught. New photographs have emerged claiming to show China’s advanced J-XDS sixth-generation stealth fighter during ground taxi tests, potentially providing the clearest images yet of the secretive aircraft developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation.

The images purport to show the tailless aircraft on the ground at Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s aerodrome. While Chinese military aviation researchers have assessed the photographs as appearing authentic rather than computer-generated imagery, the images remain unverified and their authenticity cannot be independently confirmed.

The J-XDS, also referred to unofficially as the J-50, represents China’s claimed heavy sixth-generation stealth fighter design. The photographs reveal key technical details of what appears to be an advanced aircraft configuration, including a distinctive tailless airframe, twin engines with two-dimensional thrust vectoring capability, and what appears to be an electro-optical targeting system mounted below the nose.

Wow 😯 … I know we have to be careful, especially since the latest CG and PS photos are getting more and more realistic, but according to some rumours the alleged photographer climbed the wall at SAC and was caught. pic.twitter.com/NRW8E5V2uO

The images appear to show several design elements that would distinguish the aircraft from conventional fighters. The alleged J-XDS features what appears to be a lambda-shaped wing configuration without tail surfaces, seemingly designed for both aerodynamic efficiency and reduced radar cross-section. Notable in the images are what appear to be movable wingtip control surfaces.

The photographs seem to show supersized engine inlets with what appear to be diverterless supersonic intakes (DSI), a design feature that would enhance both maneuverability and stealth characteristics if authentic. The aircraft’s exhaust nozzles display what appears to be F-22-like two-dimensional thrust vectoring with serrated edges around the exhaust housing.

A new version of the yesterday posted one showing the SAC J-XDS was posted😮🤨and even if I’m not sure if AI-enhanced or if it might be even the original one, this dark version with stronger contrast shows even more details. pic.twitter.com/tBloXpgKJk

Whether the J-XDS represents a technology demonstrator or a more production-representative design remains unknown. The aircraft’s specific mission profile has not been disclosed, though current observations suggest a focus on air-to-air operations. Indications of ventral and lateral weapon bays have been noted online but not officially confirmed.

The J-XDS first appeared on Chinese social media in late December 2024, alongside two other advanced aircraft designs. These include a three-engine aircraft commonly referred to as the J-36 and another stealth fighter design, both part of China’s comprehensive sixth-generation fighter development program.

The increased frequency of sightings of advanced Chinese military aircraft, including flights over populated areas, suggests a shift toward greater transparency from Beijing regarding its defense technology programs.
