Newly surfaced images online provide the clearest view yet of China’s latest stealth fighter prototype, unofficially dubbed the J-50. Designed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), the jet was first spotted in flight over Shenyang in December.

The images suggest that the aircraft, which Chinese sources called a sixth-generation fighter, is smaller than the J-36 and features a stealthy, possibly tailless design built around a lambda-shaped wing configuration.
“Northern Sixer” SAC Tailless J-50(?) Fighter Best CG So Far
– The Cockpit Shape not Raised as high as that Much
– The Capsulated Cockpit Seems Deeply Recessed into the Fuselage
– Side Weapon Bay Should be added into the CG Design https://t.co/dDDjEp6vU6 pic.twitter.com/SvS9ATaPKV— David Wang (@Nickatgreat1220) April 4, 2025
Analysts, including those from the military aviation blog The Aviationist, highlighted several standout features in the latest imagery. One of the most notable is the jet’s movable wingtips, which could enhance aerodynamic control and maneuverability during flight.
Another key detail is a prominent bulge beneath the nose—believed to house an electro-optical targeting sensor, similar to systems used in the U.S. F-35 and China’s own J-20 stealth fighter.
While official specifications on the J-50’s speed, range, and weapons systems remain unconfirmed, earlier reports indicate that it boasts an impressive combat radius of around 2,200 kilometers, positioning it for extended-range operations. It is also expected to be equipped with cutting-edge weaponry, including the PL-15 and PL-17 air-to-air missiles, as well as the YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship missile.
The J-50 was first seen in flight in December just hours after images of China’s rumored regional stealth bomber appeared online.
