U.S. Marines from III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) deployed the Medium-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC), an Iron Dome-derived surface-to-air system, to Guam’s Mason Range during Exercise Valiant Shield 2026, marking the first confirmed deployment of the platform at a major exercise in the Pacific.

Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works is building a unified command-and-control (C2) network linking MRIC, the Army’s Patriot, and the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) into a single battlespace picture for the Guam Defense System (GDS).
The U.S. Army’s Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Fires is leading the GDS Joint Project Office toward initial operational capability through live-fire evaluations scheduled through August. The GDS also serves as a blueprint for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative.
“By enhancing our defensive capabilities with the MRIC, we are strengthening our ability to stand with our allies and partners,” III MEF Commanding General Lt. Gen. Roger Turner said. “III MEF is ready and able to answer the call in times of crisis.”
MRIC addresses a capability gap in Marine air defense, engaging threats between 2.5 and 43 miles, beyond the short-range Stinger but inside the Patriot’s optimal envelope. The system fires the SkyHunter, the American-manufactured counterpart of Israel’s Tamir missile. Israel delivered its first Tamir interceptors to the Marine Corps in May 2026. The program’s value stands at $412 million.
The deployment coincides with a command transition on Guam. Task Force Talon, which operated a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery on the island for 13 years, stood down July 1 at Andersen Air Force Base, replaced by the reactivated 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment (ADAR). The 43rd ADAR previously fielded the Army’s Iron Dome batteries in 2021.
Exercise Tenacious Archer 2026, beginning July 24 in Palau, will test Patriot PAC-2 and MADIS Mk 1 and Mk 2.
