Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) reported that Russian service members are receiving specialized training in Syria, supervised by the IRGC and Lebanese Hezbollah. This drone operation training is reportedly being conducted at the Shayrat Airbase in the Homs Governorate. The drones in question include the Iranian models Shahed-136 and Ababil-3, in addition to the Raad remote-controlled aircraft system. Hezbollah commander Kamal Abu Sadiq, noted for his expertise in drone manufacturing and maintenance, is overseeing the program.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian intelligence disclosed that Syrian “mercenaries” are also partaking in this training regimen, with the intention of supporting Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. On February 9, it was stated that Russia is recruiting up to 1,000 Syrian “mercenaries,” focusing their training on urban combat techniques and tactics. After completing their training, these fighters are expected to be transported from the Khmeimim Airbase in Latakia, western Syria, into Russia, eventually being deployed into Ukraine. This initiative includes granting Russian citizenship to the Syrian participants.
