The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) located the bodies during a military operation in Gaza. The exact location where the bodies were found has not been disclosed. IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari confirmed that the hostages were killed while fleeing the Nova music festival, a large outdoor event near the Gaza border that was attacked by Hamas militants. The bodies have been transferred to medical professionals for forensic examination and identification.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his deep sorrow over the recovery of the bodies. “We will return all of our hostages, both the living and the dead,” he said, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to bringing back all those who were taken. The operation to recover the bodies was carried out jointly by the IDF and Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service.
Following the attack, half of the hostages were released through negotiated prisoner swaps during a weeklong cease-fire in November. As of now, around 100 hostages remain in Gaza, along with the bodies of about 30 more.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to significant casualties on both sides. Gaza health officials report that more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began.
In Israel, there is a division among the public and political leaders regarding the approach to the conflict. Some advocate for prioritizing the recovery of hostages, while others believe that the focus should be on eradicating Hamas. The situation remains tense as negotiations mediated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt continue without significant breakthroughs.
