BBC, citing medics at the Kuwait Field Hospital, reported that the initial strike targeted a tent in the al-Mawasi displacement area, west of Khan Younis, followed by blasts near the hospital, killing five Palestinians and injuring several others.
The IDF said the operation followed an attack in Rafah where Hamas militants emerged from an underground shaft, fired an anti-tank missile, and planted an explosive on an armored vehicle. Israeli forces killed two of the attackers on site.
“The Hamas terrorist organization carried out a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, during which terrorists attacked IDF troops deployed in the Rafah area,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later wished the injured soldier a speedy recovery and stated that the IDF would respond appropriately.
Hamas described Israel’s actions as “barbaric, indiscriminate and a violation of the ceasefire” that began on 10 October.
