Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a public message of support for American college students participating in pro-Palestine protests. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Khamenei praised the students’ actions, stating, “Dear university students in the United States of America, you are standing on the right side of history.” His remarks have sparked significant controversy and backlash across social media platforms.
Khamenei’s message described the students as having formed a “branch of the Resistance Front,” aligning them with Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Hamas. He commended their “courageous defense of the Palestinian people” and criticized the U.S. government for its support of Israel. The letter, dated May 25, included antisemitic tropes, claiming Jews manipulate global media, which further fueled the controversy.
House Speaker Mike Johnson responded on X, stating, “When you’ve won the Ayatollah, you’ve lost America.” Many social media users echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Khamenei’s endorsement reflects poorly on the protesters. Iranian American activist Elica Le Bon criticized both the Iranian regime and the protesters.
The protests on U.S. college campuses began at Columbia University and quickly spread to other institutions. These demonstrations oppose Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which started after Hamas’ October 7 attack that resulted in significant Israeli casualties and hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation that has led to thousands of Palestinian deaths, according to Gazan health authorities.
Khamenei’s letter also addressed the broader “Resistance Front” against Israel and expressed solidarity with U.S. professors supporting the student protests. The ongoing conflict has intensified regional tensions, with Iran’s involvement through proxy groups and direct military actions further complicating the situation.
