Grenoble prosecutor François Touret de Coucy said the attacker, who was reportedly armed with a Kalashnikov-style assault rifle, entered the establishment, threw the grenade, and fled without saying a word.
The suspect remains at large. While authorities have not yet identified a motive, Coucy stated that investigators do not believe this was a terrorist attack.
Coucy said investigators are exploring the possibility of a gang-related conflict, as Grenoble and its surrounding areas have seen increased violence linked to drug and cigarette trafficking.
Catherine Séguin, the prefect of Isère, condemned the incident as a “cowardly criminal act.”
Grenoble Mayor Éric Piolle wrote on X, condemning the incident as “a criminal act of extraordinary violence.” He also expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their efforts.
