Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is in advanced discussions to acquire the Israeli cybersecurity startup Wiz for an estimated $23 billion. The potential acquisition of Wiz would be the largest in Google’s history, significantly surpassing its previous record purchase of Motorola for $12.5 billion in 2012.
Wiz, founded in 2020 by Assaf Rappaport and fellow alumni of Israel’s elite Unit 8200 military intelligence unit, has rapidly grown into a prominent player in the cybersecurity market. The company provides advanced cloud security solutions and boasts a client roster that includes major corporations such as BMW, Slack, and Salesforce. Wiz’s founders have credited their military training for their entrepreneurial success, with Unit 8200 being known as a breeding ground for tech innovators.
The negotiations between Google and Wiz began after Wiz raised $1 billion in venture capital earlier this year, bringing its valuation to $12 billion. The proposed acquisition price of $23 billion reflects Google’s initiative to secure its cloud infrastructure and expand its cybersecurity. The acquisition would follow Google’s 2022 purchase of cybersecurity company Mandiant, for $5.4 billion. Further solidifying it’s investments in the security space.
Industry experts view this acquisition as a significant indicator of the centrality of cybersecurity in the tech sector’s future. “This is monumental, showing that Google is focusing on the future requirements of security,” said Seth Kilander, CEO of Ki Security and Compliance Group. The deal is also seen as a strategic play to compete with other tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon in the cybersecurity space.
Despite the current antitrust scrutiny faced by major tech companies under the Biden administration, analysts believe that a change in the political landscape could ease regulatory pressures and encourage more mergers and acquisitions in the industry. The acquisition of Wiz would provide Google with a competitive edge in the cybersecurity market, enhancing its cloud service offerings and potentially driving more business to its platform.
