France’s cybercrime unit (OFAC) is working to remove leaked private data of several Israeli athletes competing in the Paris Olympic Games from social media platforms. The data breach, reportedly orchestrated by a hacker group named “Zeus,” includes sensitive information such as blood test results, login credentials, and military status, police sources confirmed on Saturday.
The leaked information was disseminated on Telegram and other social media platforms starting Thursday, with subsequent doxing activities continuing into Friday. The breach has raised significant security concerns, prompting OFAC to initiate an investigation and seek the removal of the compromised data. The Pharos platform, which monitors unlawful online content, reported the leaks, leading OFAC to act swiftly to mitigate the potential risks.
The data leak coincides with an ongoing investigation into death threats received by three Israeli athletes and potential antisemitic hate crimes during a recent football match in Paris. The threats and hate incidents occurred amid heightened tensions and security measures at the Olympic Games. The Paris prosecutors’ office is spearheading the investigation, assisted by France’s national anti-online hate body.
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, recently warned French authorities of potential threats from Iran-backed groups targeting Israeli athletes and tourists during the Games. In a letter to his French counterpart, Katz highlighted intelligence assessments pointing to possible terrorist plots aimed at disrupting the event and harming Israeli participants. He stressed the urgency of addressing these threats to ensure the safety of all involved.
In response to these security concerns, Israeli athletes are receiving enhanced protection, including 24-hour surveillance and escorts by elite tactical units. Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, is also involved in providing security for the athletes throughout the Olympics.
Meanwhile, the Paris prosecutors’ office is investigating possible antisemitic hate crimes that occurred during an Israel-Paraguay football match. Reports indicate that fans, some masked and carrying Palestinian flags, displayed banners with anti-Israel messages and chanted slogans referencing the Gaza conflict. The Paris Olympic organizers have lodged a complaint with the police, and those involved could face charges of aggravated incitement to racial hatred.
