Polish prosecutors announced on Wednesday that a European arrest warrant has been issued for a Ukrainian man suspected of involvement in the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines. The warrant, issued by German authorities, marks a big step in the ongoing investigation into one of the most mysterious and politically charged incidents of the war in Ukraine.

The suspect, identified only as Volodymyr Z. under German privacy laws, was reportedly living in Poland when the warrant was issued in June. However, Polish authorities were unable to detain him as he had already left the country by the time the warrant was received. According to Polish officials, the suspect managed to cross the Polish-Ukrainian border in early July without being stopped because his name had not been added to the international database of wanted persons.

The explosions, which occurred in September 2022, severely damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, crucial conduits for transporting Russian gas to Europe. The incident fueled widespread speculation and accusations, with various parties being blamed, including Russia and pro-Ukrainian groups. However, concrete evidence has been scarce until now.

German investigators believe that Volodymyr Z., a professional diver, was part of a team that planted explosives on the underwater pipelines. The team is alleged to have used a sailing boat to carry out the attack, stopping at several locations in Denmark, Sweden, and Poland before executing the sabotage. Despite these suspicions, the suspect has denied any involvement when contacted by German media.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its geopolitical implications. The Nord Stream pipelines were a focal point of energy relations between Russia and Europe. The investigation remains ongoing, with German, Swedish, and Danish authorities all having conducted probes into the incident. While Sweden and Denmark have since closed their investigations without identifying any suspects, Germany continues to pursue leads, as evidenced by the recent warrant.
