As Russian forces initiated their “special military operation” in Ukraine, Estonia’s military intelligence, led by Colonel Margo Grosberg, provided Ukraine with advance warnings about a significant airborne assault aimed at capturing Kyiv. This intelligence allowed Ukrainian forces to prepare and ultimately prevent the Russian 76th Guards Air Assault Division from landing at Hostomel airport, a move that could have drastically altered the course of the conflict.
Grosberg, in an interview with Delfi Estonia, highlighted the importance of this intervention and reflected on Russia’s military miscalculations. He noted the failure of Russian forces to fully prepare for the war and the impact of dictatorships’ echo chambers on strategic planning. Grosberg’s insights also covered Estonia’s intelligence gathering prior to the invasion, Russian military capabilities, and the continuous adaptation and learning curves of both Russian and Ukrainian forces as the conflict progressed.
As Grosberg steps down from his role, his tenure underscores Estonia’s sharp focus on Russian military movements and strategic intentions, contributing significantly to NATO’s understanding and response to the unfolding situation in Ukraine.Â
