US military aircraft recently intercepted a high-altitude balloon over Utah, assessing it to be non-threatening and likely a hobbyist craft. Detected at approximately 44,000 feet, the balloon was observed drifting eastward from Colorado. This event occurs in the context of heightened sensitivity to aerial objects following last year’s incident where a Chinese balloon crossed the US, leading to significant diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing.
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed the interception, stating that fighter jets were scrambled to investigate the balloon once it was spotted. Despite initial uncertainties about its origin and purpose, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the balloon as posing no flight safety hazard. The balloon, made from Mylar and carrying a small cube-shaped box, contrasts sharply with last year’s episode involving a Chinese balloon, which was shot down by an F-22 jet fighter after being deemed a spy craft by US officials.
