On Sunday, a large number of Gaza residents headed towards the north of the Gaza Strip, driven by rumors that checkpoints on al-Rashid road south of Gaza City had been opened. Families moved towards these checkpoints in hope of returning to their homes in the devastated northern areas. However, the IDF confirmed to AFP that these reports were false and reiterated that the northern Gaza remains an active combat zone, unsafe for civilian reentry.

This incident occurred amid ongoing tensions and conflict in the region, following a series of military engagements that have significantly impacted the Gaza Strip.
The IDF has consistently advised civilians against attempting to return to the north of Gaza, emphasizing the dangers due to ongoing military operations. Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, issued a warning via social media advising against travel in the area, stressing the ongoing risks.
This move north was partly triggered by severe living conditions in the south, where many Gazans have been displaced to areas like Rafah. These regions are facing overcrowding and insufficient resources, with many residents living in temporary accommodations such as tent camps and schools turned into shelters.
Israeli military operations in Gaza have been focused on combating Hamas militants, with significant parts of northern Gaza, including Gaza City, experiencing extensive damage. Discussions and negotiations about a ceasefire and the conditions for civilian return continue, but the immediate outlook remains uncertain with no immediate resolution in sight.
