The Freedom of Russia Legion and Siberian Battalion, paramilitary units composed of ethnic Russians and operating under the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, have initiated raids into the border areas of Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk Oblasts. These groups claim to have controlled certain border areas, though Russian officials and media contest these claims, stating the attacks were repelled.
Reports indicate that fighting occurred in multiple locations across Belgorod and Kursk. Russian military bloggers and correspondents reported attempts by the Legion to break through the border, supported by armor and limited artillery. The raids were characterized by both sides as involving direct confrontations, with Russian sources claiming to have inflicted losses on the attackers.

Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, denied official Ukrainian military involvement in these operations, asserting the groups act independently.
Previous assaults by these groups into Russian territory aimed to create security zones near the border. These operations utilized equipment and vehicles supplied by the Ukrainian military, including vehicles provided by the United States, highlighting the complex dynamics of international support in this conflict.

The strategic intent behind these raids appears focused more on symbolic impact and propaganda rather than establishing a lasting presence in Russian territory. The operations draw attention to the vulnerabilities in Russia’s border security and exert psychological pressure on Russian forces.
In response to these raids, there have been discussions in Russian circles about the adequacy of border defenses and the potential need for redeployment of resources. These discussions come amid ongoing Ukrainian efforts to target military and infrastructure sites within Russia.
Good morning from the Russian-Ukrainian border.
