Beijing’s recent deployment of two vessels, including the 165-meter Chinese coast guard ship dubbed “The Monster,” near Scarborough Shoal has heightened tensions with the Philippines.
The Scarborough Shoal, a strategic and resource-rich area, has long been a flashpoint in the South China Sea disputes. China’s deployment of its largest coast guard vessel near the shoal is seen as an enforcement of its anti-trespassing policy, aimed at asserting its claims over the contested waters. This move has been perceived as a provocation by the Philippines, which also claims sovereignty over the area.
Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro criticized China’s Coast Guard rules as a matter of international concern. “China’s rules about how its Coast Guard can operate in the South China Sea are a provocation,” Teodoro stated.
In response to China’s actions, the Philippines has pledged to strengthen its security alliances and conduct realistic combat drills. “We will press efforts to build security alliances and stage joint naval sails with the United States, Japan, and Australia in disputed waters,” Defense Secretary Teodoro announced during the 126th Philippine Navy anniversary celebration. He dismissed China’s criticisms of these moves as paranoia, emphasizing the need for preparedness and deterrence.
