China is using DeepSeek, a Chinese-developed artificial intelligence (AI) platform, to help design its most advanced fighter jets, according to a report by South China Morning Post.
Wang Yongqing, lead designer at the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute reportedly said that his team has carried out in-depth research into how large language models, the technology behind AI systems like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, can be applied to analyze and solve complex, real-world engineering challenges.
“The technology has already shown promising potential for application, providing new ideas and approaches for future aerospace research and development,” Wang was quoted as saying.
Wang explained that the AI reduces time spent on routine tasks, allowing researchers to focus on key parts of aircraft development. He called it “an important step” for China’s aerospace industry.
According to Wang, work is ongoing on upgraded versions of the J-35 with multipurpose and air-sea capability. Wang said the progress is “steady and according to plan.”
The Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute, under the state-run Aviation Industry Corporation of China, has developed some of the country’s key military aircraft, including the J-15 Flying Shark and the J-35 stealth fighter.
