China has introduced what is believed to be the world’s first dedicated fixed-wing drone carrier. Located at a less prominent shipyard on the Yangtze River, far from the major naval construction sites in Shanghai. Unlike China’s other aircraft carriers, notably the Type-003 Fujian which is undergoing sea trials and known for its large size and capabilities, this new vessel is notably smaller with a unique design focused on drone operations.

This drone carrier’s introduction into the naval arena is not just about expanding China’s military capabilities but also likely serves broader strategic functions. According to J. Michael Dahm, Senior Resident Fellow at the Mitchell Institute, and other analysts, the ship could be involved in ‘Electronic Blue Force’ training operations, where it would simulate enemy forces during drills, or it might serve as an experimental platform to further develop China’s drone deployment strategies at sea.
