After the test flight of two of its advanced sixth-generation fighter jets, China has surprised the world once again with the debut flight of its new KJ-3000 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, built on the Y-20B cargo plane platform.
Developed by Xi’an Aircraft Corporation (XAC), the KJ-3000 reportedly conducted its maiden flight on November 29, 2024, though photos of the aircraft only surfaced on December 27.
China just went full berserk.

The KJ-3000 features a large circular radome fixed on its rear fuselage, likely housing advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array radar systems capable of 360-degree coverage. Additional domes on the forward fuselage and tail suggest enhanced communication and intelligence capabilities.
Built on the Y-20B platform, the KJ-3000 benefits from Shenyang WS-20 engines, which improve speed, range, and altitude compared to earlier turboprop AEW&C models. These upgrades allow the aircraft to conduct extended missions at higher altitudes, providing better radar coverage and tracking capabilities for low-flying targets.
The aircraft’s larger airframe supports a bigger crew, enabling longer and more complex operations. Reports stated that refueling capability may be added in the future, further extending its range and mission duration.
The KJ-3000 fills gaps in China’s current AEW&C fleet, which is primarily made up of smaller turboprop models like the KJ-200 and KJ-500. Its advanced systems will enhance the People’s Liberation Army Air Force and Navy’s ability to detect and track low-flying aircraft and missiles, even in challenging terrains.
The KJ-3000’s debut follows several major Chinese military advancements, including the unveiling the launch of the Type 076 amphibious assault ship.Â
